What is venom allergy testing and how is it performed?

Venom allergy testing is used to determine whether a patient is allergic to insect stings such as those from bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets. Testing typically begins with a skin prick test, where a small amount of venom extract is applied to the surface of skin. If additional evaluation is needed, intradermal testing may be performed, in which a small amount of venom is injected just under the skin’s surface. The test area is observed for redness or swelling, which may indicate an allergic response.

Why and who should consider venom allergy testing?

Venom allergy testing is recommended for individuals who have experienced a systemic reaction after an insect sting — symptoms such as hives, swelling beyond the sting site, dizziness, throat tightness, or difficulty breathing. Testing helps confirm whether the reaction was caused by venom allergy and identifies which insect is responsible. Accurate diagnosis allows allergists to recommend venom immunotherapy, a highly effective treatment that can significantly reduce the risk of future severe reactions.

What is venom immunotherapy?

Venom immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots for insect sting allergies, is a long-term treatment that helps desensitize the immune system to venom. Small, gradually increasing doses of purified, standardized venom extract are administered under medical supervision over several months until a maintenance dose is reached. Most patients continue maintenance treatment for several years, with the duration determined by their allergist based on individual allergy history and response to therapy. This process trains the body to tolerate the venom and significantly lowers the risk of serious allergic reactions from future stings.
